Hemp Tea Idea! Is it Get You High?

In the past, humans cultivated hemp for thousands of years, primarily in China, for producing fiber and medicine. It was so widely used that there is evidence of archeological hemp in broken Chinese pottery.

The Shu Kung, a book that dates to about 2350B.C, talks about the soil in Shandong, the region where a very rare type of silk, shantung, was made but also used to cultivate hemp.

In 2737 B.C, the Chinese emperor Shen Neng began prescribing hemp tea for illnesses such as gout, rheumatism, and malaria. It became so popular it spread through Asia, the Middle East, and Africa. By the late 18th century, early editions of American medical journals began to recommend hemp seeds and roots to treat inflamed skin. In the 19th century, hemp continued to develop.

In all its forms, using cannabis became controversial in the 20th century because of the plant’s psychoactive effects. Even though hemp tea doesn’t get you high, its distribution was limited due to taboo. However, in recent years, it has been explored as a therapeutic option and the use of tea, specifically, to access the plant’s benefits in a more relaxed way.

What Is Hemp Tea?

Hemp tea, as its name indicates, is the combination of tea and different types of hemp plant cuttings such as hemp leaf. These are some of its variations:

Organic hemp tea, for instance, can be made by using the buds, flowers, seeds, leaves, stems, and even the roots of the plants.
Young hemp tea is made by using dried clippings of a young cannabis plant, and it is used mostly as a supplement for vitamins as it has a lower CBD content.
Mature hemp tea is made using the flowers and leaves of older cannabis plants, with higher CBD levels.
High THC tea is a kind of hemp tea with high THC levels, which is not federally legal in the US. It is important to know that its components need to be activated first by breaking the buds and heating them for at least 45 minutes for them to be effective.
CBD tea is made by adding CBD oil to regular tea. However, it also comes in teabags.

Now, it is also important to state the difference between hemp tea, and all its varieties, from cannabis tea.

Cannabis tea is made of cannabis, which means it is a plant that can contain both THC and CBD.

Cannabis root tea is made with the fresh roots of the plant. It takes longer to prepare, especially when it’s homemade.
Does Hemp Tea Get You High?

No, it does not. The thing with hemp is that you can eat it, drink it, smell it or munch it, and it will never, NEVER, have the psychoactive effects cannabis (marijuana) has.

That is why it is so important to differentiate between marijuana and hemp.

Both come from the same plant species, which is Cannabis Sativa. That’s why, superficially, they look the same, but they are not the same.

Industrial hemp, which has been grown legally in the United States since 2014, has to limit its levels of THC, which is the psychoactive compound of marijuana.

The amount of THC in hemp is minuscule. The varieties used to create hemp tea normally contain less than 0.3% THC, which assures consumers of having a calm, high-free experience.

What hemp plant does have is CBD, which stands for cannabidiol and is the second most prevalent of the active compounds in cannabis, an essential component in medical marijuana, and it does not cause dependence on consumers.

Another important question about hemp tea that many new users wonder about is if it has caffeine. The answer is: no. Like other herbal teas, it is an infusion so, if you want an extra push for your day, this is not it since it will most likely relax you.

Hemp products can cause some side effects such as nausea and throat irritation. Accordingly, those who consume hemp tea should be aware it can cause a slight drop in blood pressure. If it is CBD tea, it can cause dryness of the mouth and a little bit of sleepiness. If you are a new user of hemp tea and are afraid it might not suit you, seek medical opinions first.
